ANNOTATION: The method is mainly used when working with text, but it can also be used well for reflection. It works with plus (+), minus (-), exclamation point (!), question mark (?) signs and is good for conducting a structured discussion

DURATION: 15-30 min. (depends on chosen procedure, number and experience of pupils)

PROCEDURE:

1. If you are new to the method, distribute the WORKSHEET (see below) to the students. When repeating the method, they will no longer need it, they record it on paper or orally.

2. With a plus sign, the students indicate what they perceive as positive about the activity (it can refer to, for example, the scope of the activity, an idea, a message, a scene, or a form).

3. The minus sign, on the other hand, indicates what they perceive as negative.

4. There are several options for the exclamation mark. Choose ideally according to the message of the activity. Participants can talk about what was new to them in the activity, the topic, what they consider to be its strongest part, etc.

5The question mark allows you to ask questions. The answers can then be given in different ways: by searching together, by assigning work for the next class, by direct answer.

6. Then, one by one, share what the participants wrote down for each sign. Let them discuss and ask each other questions. Discuss the positive moments first, then the negative, etc.

7. Do not write down conclusions or comments. Rather focus on guiding the discussion.

EXAMPLE OF WORKSHEET OF I.N.S.E.R.T METHOD (see assignment for submission)

1. Next to the plus sign, write what you perceive as positive about the activity/task.

2. Next to the minus sign, write what you perceive as negative.

3. In the box with an exclamation point, write which moment of the activity/topic made the strongest impression on you.

4. In the field with a question mark, write the questions that come to your mind about the topic.
