INTRODUCTORY MOTIVATION PART

The video deals with the topic of plastic waste in seas and oceans, accompanied by science populariser Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. The video is interspersed with many statistical data and authentic visual materials. It describes the garbage cycle and answers basic questions such as: "How does this garbage get to these places?", or "What does it create, and how does it move?". It deals with the formation of garbage patches, what causes them to clump together, and what the possibilities for their disposal are. In conclusion, Charles Moore reflects on the future and changes that human society has go through.

While watching the video, each participant will write down their notes in a so-called "thought cloud" (see file thought cloud in the course). Subsequently, in an online debate they will discuss their opinions, written in their thought clouds, via using guiding questions, such as:

  • Have you noticed any possible solutions to the problem of plastic pollution?

  • How can this pollution affect each of us?

  • Is it our problem?

  • Think about how we can prevent sea pollution, and how to proceed in solving this problem.

  • By what means and routes does waste enter the ocean?

 MAIN PART:

  • Have a look at the experiments below (see files Experiment 1: Flow of water in the ocean, and Experiment 2: Layering of water in the ocean according to its various properties) and, if you want to, carry them out.

  • Physical experiments deal with the issue of sea currents and the determination of water salinity (during these experiments, you can then have the chance to experience how water naturally moves in the world's oceans).

  • Make up and prepare your own experiment and then carry it out on your own. Also, when doing the experiment, take some pictures of it.

 FINAL PART:

  • Submit your experiment design with all its requirements, such as the tools, the description of the experiment (including its aim, the detailed desctiption of the experiment, the result etc.), and the photos or videos you took during the experiment.

  • Create your own poster/padlet/mind map or whiteboard with a thematic focus on education in the area of plastic waste management and submit it.

  • Joint presentation of the resulting materials and discussion.
